You may be looking for a new career in Law or you may be looking to advance your career. There are many different jobs available including Legal Secretaries, Litigation Legal Secretaries, Employment Law Officers, Claims Consultants, Junior Legal Secretaries and many more. Choosing your career path can be difficult. This will depend on your experience and qualifications and career goals.

Legal secretaries help lawyers and legal executives with the day-to-day tasks in a legal firm. Duties include word processing, dealing with telephone calls and correspondence, and general clerical work such as filing, organising diaries, keeping records and controlling petty cash. There may be some contact with clients when dealing with enquiries, telephone calls and making appointments. Some legal secretaries may attend court or police cells, and contact other firms and organisations to request or deliver information.

Some law firms specialise in areas such as corporate law or criminal law, while others deal with a wider range of legal matters including property purchase, divorce and family law. In a local firm, undertaking general legal work, secretaries may have a wider variety of duties but less opportunity to specialise.

Some employers prefer to recruit applicants with good general secretarial skills and train them on the job.

There are a variety of courses leading to legal secretarial qualifications. The Institute of Paralegal Training (IPT) sets examinations at two levels: the Legal Secretaries Certificate and Legal Secretaries Diploma.

Ilex Paralegal Training (Ilex PT) offers a Legal Secretaries Certificate (Level II) and Legal Secretaries Diploma (Level III).

London Chamber of Commerce and Industry offer First and Second Certificates for Legal Secretaries.

OCR (RSA) offer legal text processing awards and a legal option in the Diploma in Administrative and Secretarial Procedures.

In Scotland there is an SQA National Certificate with specialist legal text processing, audio and shorthand modules, and an SQA HNC and HND in legal services.

Foundation and Advanced Modern Apprenticeships (MAPPs) may be available for people aged 16-24. For details see: MAPPs (England); Skillseekers MAPPs (Scotland); National Traineeships MAPPs (Wales); and MAPPs (Northern Ireland).

Job Hunting

Job hunting in today’s marketplace can be a complicated task. Current economic conditions dictate that the recruitment market is very much an employers’ market. There is an abundance of candidates fighting for fewer jobs.

If you are searching for a job today specifically, there are the traditional methods of job searching, which includes responding to newspaper ads, applying directly to employers, and signing on with a recruitment agency. With the advent of the internet, there now exists another, more powerful, medium with which to search for jobs.

The internet is fast becoming a dominant force in bringing candidates and employers together in an effective way. There are now numerous "Job Boards" on the internet that advertise vacancies from all over the UK.

These Job Boards on the internet are a very effective resource for candidates, recruitment agencies and employers. As a candidate searching for a job on the internet, you can do so from your home, as long as you have a PC and an internet connection.

Additionally, you can register on these Job Boards for vacancy alerts sent to you via email. You simply specify your requirements for the type of job, and you are then alerted immediately a vacancy that may be of interest is lodged on the Job Board.

A recent trend in internet recruitment is that employers and candidates are becoming very specific in their requirements, with a strong emphasis now on industry specific job boards. For example, there are Job Boards like JustEngineers focused solely on engineering vacancies and CWJobs focused on IT jobs. There has been an explosion of Job Boards into the industry specific segment and this will certainly continue to be the trend. The reasons for this are that employers know that they have a very targeted audience for the vacancies they are advertising. With the general Job Boards, employers tend to receive a vast number of applications from candidates who really are not suited to the job; industry-specific Job Boards lessen these unwanted CVs greatly.

Given that employers essentially are looking for candidates with specific industry experience, then the industry-specific Job Boards are an excellent medium for employers and recruiters to advertise. Recruitment agencies also are tending to specialise in certain industry sectors. If they are to invest in advertising on job boards, then they will be very interested in Boards that focus on their same industry sector. Some of these types of Boards provide a great source of additional information and job news, specific to that industry sector. This includes new product and service innovations in that industry, company/employer news, and other general information specific to that industry. They also can provide advice on CV writing and interview techniques.

Most employers are looking for skills that closely match the requirements of the job. This saves them additional training costs. Given this, it is important to emphasize your experience on the CV. Education is really secondary (unless the vacancy is a very technical one that requires a strong educational background).

Also bear in mind that recruitment agents will really only be interested in promoting you if they have a specific vacancy that they believe you are a good match for. If you do not have the skills, experience or education required for the current vacancies, then your CV will most likely not be considered. This does make things difficult if you are trying to change industry sectors. Experience is generally the key! So look for vacancies that you can match with your skills and experience.

If you obtain vacancies that match more closely your skills, then you can be more confident in getting the job. This will come across in the interview and will hopefully be a major influence in you securing a job.
