You may be experienced in Marketing, or you may be looking for your first job. There are many jobs available from Trainee positions to experienced Marketing Managers. Choosing your career can be difficult. This will depend on your experience, qualifications and career goals.

Marketing Managers and Marketing Executives launch products, develop and maintain a brand''s image and formulate marketing and communication plans to generate, maintain and increase existing business.

To help identify and forecast customer demands, managers are responsible for planning and co-ordinating each stage of a marketing plan. The work involves market research, product development, pricing, sales and distribution, and promotion of the product.

Export marketing managers work for companies selling their goods overseas. Products and services need to be promoted in different ways in different countries, and may require Marketing Managers to spend time abroad. Managers will face many additional problems such as variations in currency exchange rates, import restrictions and local taxes.

The four main areas of business a Marketing Manager may be involved in are fast-moving consumer goods, consumer durables, services, industrial products, and the public sector.

Many employers prefer marketing entrants to have a higher national certificate such as those from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) or diploma (HNC/HND) or a degree or professional marketing qualification. Entry to HNC and HND courses usually requires four GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) with one A level/two H grades. The minimum entry requirements for a degree are usually five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) with two A levels/three H grades. Equivalent qualifications may be accepted.

Job Hunting

Job hunting in today’s marketplace can be a complicated task. Current economic conditions dictate that the recruitment market is very much an employers’ market. There is an abundance of candidates fighting for fewer jobs.

If you are searching for a job today specifically, there are the traditional methods of job searching, which includes responding to newspaper ads, applying directly to employers, and signing on with a recruitment agency. With the advent of the internet, there now exists another, more powerful, medium with which to search for jobs.

The internet is fast becoming a dominant force in bringing candidates and employers together in an effective way. There are now numerous "Job Boards" on the internet that advertise vacancies from all over the UK.

These Job Boards on the internet are a very effective resource for candidates, recruitment agencies and employers. As a candidate searching for a job on the internet, you can do so from your home, as long as you have a PC and an internet connection.

Additionally, you can register on these Job Boards for vacancy alerts sent to you via email. You simply specify your requirements for the type of job, and you are then alerted immediately a vacancy that may be of interest is lodged on the Job Board.

A recent trend in internet recruitment is that employers and candidates are becoming very specific in their requirements, with a strong emphasis now on industry specific job boards. For example, there are Job Boards like JustEngineers focused solely on engineering vacancies and CWJobs focused on IT jobs. There has been an explosion of Job Boards into the industry specific segment and this will certainly continue to be the trend. The reasons for this are that employers know that they have a very targeted audience for the vacancies they are advertising. With the general Job Boards, employers tend to receive a vast number of applications from candidates who really are not suited to the job; industry-specific Job Boards lessen these unwanted CVs greatly.

Given that employers essentially are looking for candidates with specific industry experience, then the industry-specific Job Boards are an excellent medium for employers and recruiters to advertise. Recruitment agencies also are tending to specialise in certain industry sectors. If they are to invest in advertising on job boards, then they will be very interested in Boards that focus on their same industry sector. Some of these types of Boards provide a great source of additional information and job news, specific to that industry sector. This includes new product and service innovations in that industry, company/employer news, and other general information specific to that industry. They also can provide advice on CV writing and interview techniques.

Most employers are looking for skills that closely match the requirements of the job. This saves them additional training costs. Given this, it is important to emphasize your experience on the CV. Education is really secondary (unless the vacancy is a very technical one that requires a strong educational background).

Also bear in mind that recruitment agents will really only be interested in promoting you if they have a specific vacancy that they believe you are a good match for. If you do not have the skills, experience or education required for the current vacancies, then your CV will most likely not be considered. This does make things difficult if you are trying to change industry sectors. Experience is generally the key! So look for vacancies that you can match with your skills and experience.

If you obtain vacancies that match more closely your skills, then you can be more confident in getting the job. This will come across in the interview and will hopefully be a major influence in you securing a job.
