Purchasing managers and contract managers, manage the buying in of goods and services for all types of organisations. The work includes liasing closely with department managers to determine their requirements, sourcing suppliers of goods and services and inviting tenders. Tenders are then evaluated and negotiations are conducted with the selected suppliers.

The work involves contact with people both within the employing organisation and externally. Purchasing administrators spend much of their time using trade directories and catalogues. Using a computer is also an important part of the work, in order to record and analyse information, and to keep records.

Purchasing managers normally work with the help of a clerk or secretary. Managers working in a larger organisation might have a purchasing administrator or a team of buyers, senior buyers and others.

These Job Boards on the internet are a very effective resource for candidates, recruitment agencies and employers. As a candidate searching for a job on the internet, you can do so from your home, as long as you have a PC and an internet connection.

Additionally, you can register on these Job Boards for vacancy alerts sent to you via email. You simply specify your requirements for the type of job, and you are then alerted immediately a vacancy that may be of interest is lodged on the Job Board.

A recent trend in internet recruitment is that employers and candidates are becoming very specific in their requirements, with a strong emphasis now on industry specific job boards. For example, there are Job Boards like JustEngineers focused solely on engineering vacancies and CWJobs focused on IT jobs. There has been an explosion of Job Boards into the industry specific segment and this will certainly continue to be the trend. The reasons for this are that employers know that they have a very targeted audience for the vacancies they are advertising. With the general Job Boards, employers tend to receive a vast number of applications from candidates who really are not suited to the job; industry-specific Job Boards lessen these unwanted CVs greatly.

Given that employers essentially are looking for candidates with specific industry experience, then the industry-specific Job Boards are an excellent medium for employers and recruiters to advertise. Recruitment agencies also are tending to specialise in certain industry sectors. If they are to invest in advertising on job boards, then they will be very interested in Boards that focus on their same industry sector. Some of these types of Boards provide a great source of additional information and job news, specific to that industry sector. This includes new product and service innovations in that industry, company/employer news, and other general information specific to that industry. Most employers are looking for skills that closely match the requirements of the job. This saves them additional training costs. Given this, it is important to emphasize your experience on the CV. If you do not have the skills, experience or education required for the current vacancies, then your CV will most likely not be considered. This does make things difficult if you are trying to change industry sectors. Experience is generally the key! So look for vacancies that you can match with your skills and experience.

If you obtain vacancies that match more closely your skills, then you can be more confident in getting the job. This will come across in the interview and will hopefully be a major influence in you securing a job.
