There are many different jobs available including Legal Secretaries, Litigation Legal Secretaries, Employment Law Officers, Claims Consultants, Junior Legal Secretaries and many more. Choosing your career path can be difficult. This will depend on your experience and qualifications and career goals.

Legal secretaries help lawyers and legal executives with the day-to-day tasks in a legal firm. Duties include word processing, dealing with telephone calls and correspondence, and general clerical work such as filing, organising diaries, keeping records and controlling petty cash. There may be some contact with clients when dealing with enquiries, telephone calls and making appointments. Some legal secretaries may attend court or police cells, and contact other firms and organisations to request or deliver information.

Some law firms specialise in areas such as corporate law or criminal law, while others deal with a wider range of legal matters including property purchase, divorce and family law. In a local firm, undertaking general legal work, secretaries may have a wider variety of duties but less opportunity to specialise.

Some employers prefer to recruit applicants with good general secretarial skills and train them on the job.

There are a variety of courses leading to legal secretarial qualifications. The Institute of Paralegal Training (IPT) sets examinations at two levels: the Legal Secretaries Certificate and Legal Secretaries Diploma.

Ilex Paralegal Training (Ilex PT) offers a Legal Secretaries Certificate (Level II) and Legal Secretaries Diploma (Level III).

London Chamber of Commerce and Industry offer First and Second Certificates for Legal Secretaries.

OCR (RSA) offer legal text processing awards and a legal option in the Diploma in Administrative and Secretarial Procedures.

In Scotland there is an SQA National Certificate with specialist legal text processing, audio and shorthand modules, and an SQA HNC and HND in legal services.
