National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (N/SVQs) N/SVQs are work-based qualifications, based on National Occupational Standards (NOS), which are awarded to students who provide evidence of competence in work situations. N/SVQs are not time limited or age restricted and are taken by employees. Assessment takes place in the workplace and there are 5 N/SVQ levels ranging from fairly routine competencies at level 1 up to much more complex, technical or professional work activities at level 5. There are no exams, although some formal learning may be needed if there are skills gaps. There are numerous different occupational areas to choose from.

N/SVQs are nationally recognised qualifications that are not simply knowledge-based, but are centred around practical skills for work. Therefore, they provide the student with useful work related competencies and the employer with highly skilled, motivated staff.

As a candidate searching for a job on the internet, you can do so from your home, as long as you have a PC and an internet connection. If you are seeking employment in the Public Sector area then the job website public sector-recruitment.co.uk makes your task very simple, it offers you a direct resource for Public Sector job vacancies that are currently listed on the major job boards.

A recent trend in internet recruitment is that employers and candidates are becoming very specific in their requirements, with a strong emphasis now on local recruitment. If you do not have the skills, experience or education required for the current vacancies, then your CV will most likely not be considered. This does make things difficult if you are trying to change industry sectors. Experience is generally the key! So look for vacancies that you can match with your skills and experience.

If you obtain vacancies that match more closely your skills, then you can be more confident in getting the job. This will come across in the interview and will hopefully be a major influence in you securing a job.
