Warehousing

You may be experienced in Warehousing, or you may be looking for your first job. Choosing your career can be difficult. This will depend on your experience, qualifications and career goals.

There are many different jobs available, from Warehouse Managers, Transport Planners, Logistics Operators, through to Warehouse Operatives.

Warehouse Managers are responsible for the overall operations of warehouses. The duties vary according to what stock is due to be delivered or dispatched, and there may be seasonal variations in the workload.

Tasks include Planning deliveries and dispatch, keeping track of stock levels, ensuring correct storage of stock, keeping computerised stock system up to date.

Warehouse Managers also plan work schedules for warehouse operatives and supervisors, organise recruitment, training, health and safety and deal with disciplinary issues. They make sure that security arrangements are adequate and security procedures are carried out correctly. Other duties include scheduling the maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment and buildings, and liaising with other departments such as transport, production and marketing.

There are no minimum entry requirements. It is possible to start work as a warehouse operative, gain qualifications such as NVQs/SVQs, and progress to warehouse supervisor and manager.

Employers may require qualifications such as vocational A levels, Foundation or Intermediate GNVQs, or GSVQs levels 1 to 3 in Retail and Distributive Services. However, many companies are recruiting graduate trainees with degrees in business-related subjects. Some universities and colleges offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in relevant subjects such as logistics, supply chain management and transport management. These normally involve three years'' full-time study. There are also four-year sandwich courses combining study at university with work placements.

Entry requirements for a degree are five GCSEs (A-C)/S grades (1-3) plus two A levels/three Highers. Equivalent qualifications may be accepted.

A recent trend in internet recruitment is that employers and candidates are becoming very specific in their requirements, with a strong emphasis now on local recruitment. Companies are very interested in finding candidates that are local to their business. The reason here is that companies can save on relocation costs. Of course, if they cannot find the right skills locally, then they must look further afield.

Most employers are looking for skills that closely match the requirements of the job. This saves them additional training costs. Given this, it is important to emphasize your experience on the CV. Education is really secondary (unless the vacancy is a very technical one that requires a strong educational background).

Also bear in mind that recruitment agents will really only be interested in promoting you if they have a specific vacancy that they believe you are a good match for. If you do not have the skills, experience or education required for the current vacancies, then your CV will most likely not be considered. This does make things difficult if you are trying to change industry sectors. Experience is generally the key! So look for vacancies that you can match with your skills and experience.

If you obtain vacancies that match more closely your skills, then you can be more confident in getting the job. This will come across in the interview and will hopefully be a major influence in you securing a job.
